Anansi the Spider, Coyote, Monkey and Br'er Rabbit are favorite hero/tricksters that appear in the myths of many different cultures. How can these characters help teachers address modern day social problems? In this workshop, Bobby will guide you through these stories, helping you to discover the universal character traits within: teamwork and cooperation, respect, honesty, courtesy, and responsibility. Through a deeper understanding of the stories, you will be empowered to share these values with your students, whether through reading, telling, or hearing them on CD. This workshop will show hidden pathways towards enhancing literacy skills, character education, and the art of active listening.
A storytelling classroom is a compassionate classroom, one in which teachers and students relate in humane and respectful ways to each other and to their work. In this hands-on workshop, Bobby Norfolk, co-author of The Moral of The Story (August House 2006), will help participants discover why storytelling works, how to find the right story, and how to tell a story that engages, inspires, informs, and provides a positive social environment in and out of school.
History comes alive! Bobby demonstrates through story-theatre, how to enliven social studies and make it exciting and interesting for students in the classroom. Teachers will first observe Bobby perform a living history program such as: Through the Eyes of York; The Lewis & Clark Expedition, The Underground Railroad, Lincoln and The Civil War, or his newest offering, The Negro Baseball Leagues; A Historical Perspective. Following the performance, Bobby will work with teachers and discuss unique methods of teaching these topics using comedy, stories, and performance art.
